This course will focus on helping you develop your leadership mindset, one of the most crucial facets of leadership in a rapidly changing tech environment. This course will help you understand what it truly means to be a leader in the unpredictable field of product engineering, identify and explore the critical skills, mindsets, and techniques that effective leaders need to embody, and familiarize yourself with different types of roles and their corresponding skillsets: technology, people, business, and delivery.
Balancing these skills may sound like a daunting task but leveraging them well is essential to becoming a better leader. However, the focus isn't just about mastering these areas; it also includes the emotional intelligence necessary to thrive as a leader. Leadership isn't only about expertise; it's about confidence and managing emotions, promoting a positive work environment, and feeling good in your role. After all, how you feel impacts how you lead.
This course isn’t meant to be consumed passively—it encourages active learning, packed with case studies, exercises, and times for reflection. It’s about putting newfound knowledge into practice through ancillary activities designed to stimulate behavioural change and promote profound learning experiences. You’re encouraged to participate, reflect, and even challenge some of the notions presented, all part of the learning process that ultimately makes you a better leader.
As your guide and tutor through this journey, let me share a bit about my own experience.
I'm Andrew Murphy, and I've spent my entire career in tech. From an early age, I was thrust into leadership—in some ways, a fortunate situation that ended up moulding me into the person I am today.
Over the last decade, I’ve led various types of software development companies, including consultancies and product companies, and have confronted numerous challenges. I've worked alongside diverse cohorts of individuals, learning how to encourage, grow, develop, and influence them effectively.
This experience has made me aware of the gap in leadership training within the tech industry. Exceptional individual contributors are often promoted to leadership positions, yet they lack the necessary skills, mindsets, and techniques to transition successfully. Tech Leaders Launchpad addresses this issue by providing in-depth knowledge and tools to help understand and adapt to the ever-changing tech landscape.
In the initial stages of this course, we’ll focus on understanding leadership, a subject particularly important to me given my rocky leadership journey. My hope is that by sharing insights from my experiences, I can help facilitate a smoother transition for new leaders in the tech industry. Let’s dive in, and start this exciting journey together.
