Focus Reps for Enhancing Attention

In this lesson, we will explore how to train and improve your ability to focus and concentrate. The process is similar to getting better at any sport: with enough repetitions, you will improve over time. Our practice will involve deliberately bringing our focus back whenever it wanders.

The Practice

  1. Start with Breathing: Close your eyes and focus on your breath going in and out. Breathe in, breathe out. Concentrate on the breath going in and coming out.
  2. Notice Mind Wandering: Within a few breaths, you will notice your mind wandering. This is normal. No one can concentrate on a single thing for a very long time.
  3. Bring Focus Back: When you notice your mind wandering, bring your focus back to your breath. This is your repetition (rep).
  4. Repeat: Continue this practice. At first, it may feel weird or difficult, but over time it will become more natural and eventually second nature.

Applying the Practice

  • Start Small: Begin with just a minute or two of this breathing practice each day. This will make a dramatic difference in your ability to concentrate.
  • Expand to Other Areas: Once comfortable with the breathing practice, apply this technique to other areas of your life where you struggle with focus and concentration, such as studying, working, or any challenging tasks.

Benefits

  • Improved Focus: You will become better at noticing when you are distracted and more effective at bringing your focus back to the task at hand.
  • Reduced Distractions: Over time, distractions will become smaller and you will maintain longer periods of focus on your tasks.

Future Lessons

In the upcoming videos, we will cover:

  1. Improving Your Underlying Self: Ensuring you get enough rest, sleep, hydration, and the right diet to bring your best self to a task.
  2. Setting Realistic Expectations: Understanding how long you should expect yourself to concentrate. Is it one hour, three hours, or all day? We will discuss how to schedule your most mentally intense sessions to maintain your best concentration.
