Exercise: What day is today?

I want to introduce you to a creativity exercise that's nearly endless and it's predicated on asking yourself a question. I'll give you an example. What day is today? You can answer this in a gajillion ways, but you don't have to have that question. You can answer any basic question uniquely. Sometimes I call this the sixth answer exercise because I don't want to settle for the basic answers. I want to dig, dig, dig until I get to a unique, fun, cute answer that's creative. Let's explore how this would work.

How It Works

If I ask the question of what day is today? Most people will give logical answers like Tuesday or it's a good day, it's a bad day, it's a boring day. It's an okay day, it's the 5th of the month. All logical answers, we want to for this exercise, reject all of them. Not allowed. For this exercise, we want unique, creative answers. Some examples might be:

  • First day of the rest of my life.
  • It's a birthday of someone else. A lot of people's birthday today, not me.
  • The coolest answer I've ever seen for this is Fluffy day. I thought that was the cutest and I love it. Yeah, it's a fluffy day. You know, it's a feeling.
  • It's a self-doubting day. I'm filming videos. I don't know how these videos are going to be received. I hope for the best, but there's always self-doubt when creating things.
  • Maybe it's a day that's boring, droning on them, filming and filming and filming.
  • Maybe it's a day where not enough dessert day. Right? Like there's not enough snacks in my life for some people. That's accurate. And if you know me, I like dessert, so that's any days like that for me.

So it's simply not settling for the old answer and coming up with new angles of it. Like fluffy day. That's pretty cute. And it's very different than first day of my life. And it's very different from not enough dessert day. Some other examples might be it's a butterfly-like day. Of course, it can be very random. It has to be at least somewhat representative of how your day is. But the exercise can be, you can make a goal. Take the sixth answer and maybe that's how your day is. Right?

The Sixth Answer Rule

The point of making you the sixth answer is so that it forces you to think of at least six creative things. Logical answers don't count. Then you can change the basic question, for example, how do I use anything? Say you have a cup on your table. Think of uses for the cup. That's not to drink out of. Or think of a bottle cap. What are the uses of a bottle cap? That's not the traditional use. An eraser, a book, anything. This is just to think outside the box. And the number of questions are endless. This can get annoying at some point, but if you become good at it, it's really cool because you can come up with things like fluffy day. I mean, it's hard to say fluffy day without smiling. So that's the exercise for you, and it's something anyone can do, and I encourage you to try it.
