Common Types of Neurodiversity

Common Examples of Neurodiversity

Neurodiversity comes in many shapes and forms. Common examples include:

  • Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Each of these conditions has unique traits that help define them. They also have strengths and weaknesses that make individuals who have them stronger in certain areas and weaker in others.

Prevalence of Neurodiversity

An estimated 15 to 20% of the general population is neurodiverse. This statistic comes from Laura Stanley's "Neurodiverse Guru".

Misconceptions About Neurodiversity

There is a common misconception that neurodiversity is rare or that neurodiverse individuals are hard to find. However, it is likely that you know some neurodiverse individuals who have differences that make their brain function in a certain way or require certain accommodations at work.

Accommodations for Neurodiverse Individuals

Accommodations are something that we will cover later in this course. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a landmark piece of workplace legislation that assists neurodiverse individuals in obtaining the necessary accommodations, provided that they do not pose undue financial hardship or burden on an organization.
